Code of Student Behaviour Issues
If you have been accused of a breach of the Code of Student Behaviour
whether in an academic or non-academic context, you have the right to an advisor.
a) Inappropriate Academic Behaviour
If an instructor believes you have committed Inappropriate Academic Behaviour, he or she must first talk to you about the issue. Sometimes this is enough to clear up any misunderstandings. If the instructor still believes there has been a breach of the Code, a written report must be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty and an investigation will ensue.

b) Inappropriate Behaviour towards Members of the University Community and Other Offences
Non-academic disciplinary matters are handled through Campus Security Services rather than a Dean. In both cases, the situation must be referred to the Discipline Officer if there is any possibility for any of the Severe Sanctions.
The Discipline Officer will meet with you to hear your version of events and then will conduct a thorough investigation of the situation. He or she will then provide you with a written decision, including details of the investigation and reasons for the decision.
Any disciplinary decision can be appealed to the University Appeal Board (UAB). You will have to attend a hearing in front of an administrative tribunal, who will have the authority to uphold your appeal, vary or quash it. The decision of the UAB is final and binding.
Highlight your appeal submission and present your case clearly and concisely to the Board.
Bring an Ombudsperson to your appeal. Be prepared to answer questions about the situation, your reasons for the appeal and the remedy you are requesting. You should also be ready to direct questions to the respondent (either the Dean or a member of Campus Security).
This is your appeal. You are exercising your rights and should approach the hearing with confidence. Whether you win or lose your appeal, you will have gained an understanding of how to use the channels of appeal to deal with perceived or real injustices.
Ombudspersons are available to accompany you to all meetings, whether with an instructor, a Dean, Campus Security, or the Discipline Office. We will also help wade through and explain potentially confusing policy and act as advisor in any appeal process.

Preparing an Appeal Submission
- Go to the Appeals Coordinator to get important Appeal Information
- Get the basis of your appeal in mind.
- Check all pertinent regulations and center your submission on the basic issues.
- Seek objective assistance from the Office of the Student Ombuds.
- Identify yourself by name, faculty, and year of study in the submission.
- State the decision you are appealing, and the name of the person or body that made that decision.
- Describe the events that led up to your current situation in a brief and concise manner.
- Request a specific remedy.
- Do not mix your evidence with your requests.
- List the reasons why your appeal should be granted.
- Be brief.
- Include copies of supporting documents.
- Keep all originals and a copy of your appeal in a personal file.
- Don't give a long and emotional account unless it is relevant to the issues being discussed.
- Don't let it be apparent from your submission that you do not know the regulations pertinent to your case.
- Don't include allegations that are of a personal nature which you cannot prove or are slanderous in content.
